Ranking any top 10 anime shows is subjective, as individual preferences and opinions can significantly influence the choices.

Most Top 10 lists would likely consist of the same 4 or 5 anime, coupled with a few of our favorites and series that we have a nostalgic attachment to from our childhood.

However, considering factors such as critical acclaim, popularity, and cultural impact, here is a list of ten highly praised anime shows (in no particular order):

1. Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995):

Synopsis

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a critically acclaimed mecha anime series that follows the story of a teenage boy named Shinji Ikari. His father recruits him to pilot a giant bio-machine called an Evangelion to defend Earth from menacing beings known as Angels.

The series delves deep into character studies and psychological explorations of the main characters, providing a unique blend of action and philosophy. The series is known for its intricate storyline, complex characters, and stunning animation.

Analysis

N.G.E. is one of the few anime that I will admit, when it first came out, went way over my head. I wasn’t interested when I first saw this anime on the infamous Adult Swim. Not because it was a bad show, but because it had elements that, maturity-wise, just needed to be added to my radar. I put it on the same level as Akira regarding the complexity of the conversation it was having with its themes.

Even as I got older, I favored the retelling movies released a decade later (Rebuild of Evangelion) more than the show.

Synopsis

Cowboy Bebop is a space western anime series that follows a group of bounty hunters known as the Bebop crew as they travel through space searching for the galaxy’s most dangerous criminals. They confront their pasts, form relationships, and encounter unique and exciting characters. The series is known for blending genres, combining action, comedy, drama, and noir elements into a thrilling and entertaining story.

Analysis

Cowboy Bebop stylistically is one of my favorite anime to rewatch. It might be “The Jay-Z” of anime. No matter how old the series gets, it still holds its weight against newly released anime on a year-to-year basis. It sets the bar for anime creators that want to have a balanced story within a condensed run of episodes.

I have yet to mention the show’s musical score, which is also impressive. It’s one of the few series that comes to mind when I think of the term “classic,” It has aged with grace, so much so that Netflix released a live-action version last year in March of 2022.

3. Death Note (2006):

Synopsis

A high school student named Light Yagami discovers a mysterious notebook that can kill anyone whose name he writes in it. He decides to use the notebook to cleanse the world of criminals, but his actions attract the attention of a genius detective named L.

The two engage in a psychological battle of wits as Light outsmarts and evades L’s investigation. The story explores themes of justice, morality, and power as Light’s descent into madness becomes increasingly dangerous.

Analysis

Death Note is a particular anime because the interactions between its characters as they try to use tactics to gain an advantage over each other mimic how people treat each other in real life. Some call it “playing the game” or “playing the politics.” We also associate this terminology with being successful in life and planning our steps before making them.

Death Note is the first anime I watched where the main character used his intelligence in each episode, and it focuses on more cerebral game planning and execution than high action and a lot of power-ups. In addition, it showed me that anime could tell a story without using the same formula that was popular with most anime fanbases.

4. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009):

Synopsis

In Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, use alchemy to bring their deceased mother back to life. However, the attempt goes wrong and costs them dearly.

They embark on a journey to find the Philosopher’s Stone. This powerful artifact can restore their bodies, but they soon discover a dark conspiracy involving their country’s government and the military. Along the way, they encounter new friends and foes, face their inner demons, and ultimately must decide what they will sacrifice to achieve their goals.

Analysis

F.M.A.B. (Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood) is the 2nd adaptation of this series, and it was well worth the watch. Of course, it wouldn’t be so much better than the first adaptation, but it was indeed leaps and bounds better in every way. For context, I recommend that those who have not seen the original transformation watch it.

Then watch the 2nd adaptation; you will thank me later. Having siblings of my own, I connected with the relationship of Edward and Alphonse. Check out this show if you are into action, adventure, and great storytelling.

5. Attack on Titan (2013):

Synopsis

Attack On Titan is a popular anime series set in a world where humanity lives in fear of Titans, massive humanoid creatures who devour humans without reason. The story follows the heroic efforts of a group of soldiers as they fight to protect humanity and uncover the truth behind the Titans. The series explores survival, loss, and the human condition, all set against intense action and suspense.

Analysis

A.O.T. (Attack On Titan) had such an impact because of the uniqueness of its storyline. When I first saw the anime, it reminded me of a live-action-drama series called, The Walking Dead. The reason for this similarity is that just like the people were trying to survive and outlast the zombie population, A.O.T. is the same way; the only difference is they have to fend off creatures the size of skyscrapers! So if you are looking for a survivor-horror anime with much gore, this anime may be for you.

6. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (2019):

Synopsis

Demon Slayer is an anime series that tells the story of Tanjiro, a young boy who becomes a demon slayer to save his sister, who is turning into a full demon. With other demon slayers, Tanjiro sets out on a perilous journey to find a cure for his sister while battling dangerous demons.

Analysis

Visually outstanding, Demon Slayer is, in some circles, part of the new “Big Three” in anime. It has everything an anime fan could want in a series, action, adventure, top-notch fighting scenes. The way the animators can visualize each technique by the demons and demon slayers leaves me in awe sometimes. I love the flashiness of this anime and appreciate the Japanese culture within the series. The setting of the series seems to take place in the 19th century during the industrial revolution, and more likely before the “Meji Era” of Japan.

7. My Hero Academia (2016):

Synopsis

My Hero Academia is an anime and manga series that follows the story of a young boy named Izuku Midoriya who dreams of becoming a hero in a world where most people have superpowers. Despite not having any powers, Izuku is determined to attend U.A. High School and become a hero. Along the way, he meets a cast of colorful characters and faces numerous challenges as he pursues becoming the world’s greatest hero.

Analysis

Here we have another series that made it into the new “Big Three” of the anime category. This series is like Disney’s Sky High and Spider-Man had a baby. I have always been a fan of superheroes since I can remember. This show definitely in bodies all the traits of a superhero show. It is even better than most if not all, comic book storylines currently out as well. So if you are a fan of the “web-slinger,” the man often referred to as “Vengeance,” or want to see an excellent and original origin story for heroes and villains alike, check out this anime.

8. Naruto (2002):

Synopsis

Naruto is a young ninja who dreams of becoming the Hokage, the leader of his village. Alongside his friends Sasuke and Sakura, Naruto trains hard to improve his skills and protect his loved ones. As the story progresses, Naruto and his companions face various challenges, including dangerous missions and battles against powerful enemies. However, through hard work, perseverance, and the power of friendship, Naruto learns to overcome adversity and becomes the hero needed to save the world.

Analysis

What can I say about Naruto? It’s the first anime to make me want to record on VHS tape so I could watch it later (yea, I get it; I’m old). It is solely responsible for influencing people to run with both arms angled behind their backs, making the shape of an arrow. All jokes aside, Naruto is a cultural icon whose impact reaches insane heights. I also really enjoyed its world-building and use of ninja lore to tell its story.

When Dragon Ball Z and its affiliated shows aired and ended. It was one of the leading shows (also part of a Big Three), holding us down with great action sequences, memorable characters (there was a character for everyone), and a storyline long enough to carry us through to the next generation of anime; and yes, I include its sequels as well, at least the 1st one (sorry Boruto fans).

9. Dragon Ball Z (1989):

Synopsis

Dragon Ball Z is a classic anime series that follows the adventures of Goku, an extraterrestrial warrior who defends Earth against various villains and threats. Alongside his friends and family, Goku battles and trains to become stronger to protect those he loves. The series features a unique blend of action, humor, and heartfelt moments, making it a beloved classic among anime fans worldwide.

Analysis

Remember when I brought up nostalgia earlier in this article? This anime is the reason why I love this genre so much. At age 5, most kids watched Barney, Sesame Street, etc. I was watching Dragon Ball Z on Toonami. I was there for the original Ocean dub and when Funimation acquired the licensing for the dub here in North America. I had trading cards, toys, video games, clothes; you name it, I probably had it.

You may say this anime wasn’t that good or the fight scenes didn’t age well (Frieza and Goku fight); some of those opinions may be true, but we can not discredit what this show did for the culture of anime. The success and popularity of the show proved there was a market for this type of medium, and it helped create a pipeline of resources for other anime to make it to our shores. As a result, the Dragon Ball franchise can be found referenced in all forms of media and is carving an everlasting part in popular culture.

10. Hunter x Hunter (2011):

Synopsis

Hunter X Hunter follows the story of a young boy named Gon Freecss who discovers that his father, who he believed was dead, is a legendary Hunter — a member of a highly skilled group of individuals who undertake dangerous and adventurous tasks such as capturing criminals and finding treasures. To follow in his father’s footsteps and become a Hunter himself, Gon embarks on a perilous journey to pass the Hunter Exam, where he meets a variety of eccentric and skilled individuals along the way. As the story progresses, Gon’s journey becomes intertwined with the fates of other characters, leading to intense battles and unexpected plot twists.

Analysis

Though the manga hasn’t concluded yet, what the series creator(Yoshihiro Togashi) has been able to do up to this point has been excellent. The 2011 anime brought us a unique blend of style, character development, world development, and fight scenes, which has every fan wanting to see more. I enjoyed every bit of it; I hope the manga will conclude one day so we can get a complete story and possibly additional episodes for the anime too!

Closing Statement

You may be reading this and saying, “Solid list, but he left off this anime or that anime.” I agree with those sentiments; the great thing about anime is that it is an art form, as long as we continue to have great storytelling coupled with amazing visuals. Therefore, we always want to make room for an upcoming “O.G.” anime.

I chose to discuss a list of anime in a Top 10 list because the shows represent a diverse range of styles, storylines, and themes, all of which have significantly impacted the anime world and beyond. Of course, personal tastes and preferences will always play a factor in individual choices. Still, this list offers a solid starting point for anyone exploring the world of anime, and I thought it was a great way to pay homage to a genre of television that I have learned so much from and that is a big part of my life.

What are your thoughts on the list? Let me know in the comments; I would love to read your opinions and discuss the topic.
