A Personal Perspective on HBO‘s Masterpiece and the Profound Lessons it Offers

It was a typical Friday night, and after an exhausting week, I desperately needed an escape. While browsing HBO’s newly rebranded application called MAX, a series caught my eye: Succession.

I reflected on the trailer I saw a few months back and how it left me uninterested. However, I was looking for something that would carry me through a few weeks, and I noticed there were a few seasons listed.

I did what most people would do: to check the Rotten Tomatoes’ s Score; it has never let me down, and to this day, it has yet to disappoint.

This critically acclaimed show has been praised for its astute depiction of a media conglomerate and the family that controls it. With a hot cup of tea in hand, I dove into the tumultuous world of the Roy family.

After finishing season one, I came away not only entertained but enlightened. Here’s why I believe Succession is not just a show but an education in business and family.

A Masterclass in Business

At the heart of Succession is Waystar Royco, a media conglomerate controlled by the dysfunctional Roy family. This setting serves as an expansive backdrop for the viewer to explore the intricate workings of a multinational business empire.

Season one meticulously paints a picture of boardroom battles, shareholder negotiations, hostile takeovers, and corporate politics, echoing the dynamics within actual corporations.

As I traverse this corporate landscape with the Roy family, they are unwittingly enrolled in an engaging masterclass of business operations. The series educates its audience on subjects like corporate governance, stock acquisitions, power struggles, and public relations management, presenting them in a digestible and relatable manner.

The portrayal of Waystar Royco’s challenges in the face of changing technology, social movements, and regulatory frameworks captures the constant flux within which real-world businesses operate.

A Case Study in Family Dynamics

Beyond the world of business, Succession shines an equally bright light on family dynamics. It showcases a family teetering on the edge, its bonds strained under the weight of ambition, ego, and betrayal.

The Roy siblings — Kendall, Shiv, Roman, and Connor — grapple with their own complexities, offering viewers a deep dive into the human psyche.

In Succession, family relationships aren’t sugar-coated; they are raw, messy, and often painful, just like in real life. Watching the Roys navigate these familial waters can, in turn, lead to self-reflection for viewers about their own family dynamics.

There were times I reflected on my own relationship with my parents and siblings and being the eldest son. It portrays the struggle between personal ambition and domestic duty, between seeking approval and forging one’s own path, and the fine balance between love and rivalry within a family.

The Reality of Ethical Dilemmas

Another key aspect that makes Succession more than just a television show is its unabashed exploration of ethical dilemmas. The Roy family frequently finds themselves on the precipice of difficult choices, balancing the desire for power and success with the boundaries of morality and social responsibility.

In the real world, individuals and corporations often face similar difficulties. Succession offers viewers a valuable lesson in navigating these treacherous ethical waters.

The show is a dramatic canvas reflecting the moral gray areas frequently encountered, demonstrating how one’s choices can significantly impact personal relationships, business operations, and societal perception.

Through Succession, we see the ramifications of dishonesty, betrayal, the lure of power, and the dangerous dance between legality and morality. These elements are woven into the fabric of the narrative, offering audiences a thought-provoking exploration of ethics in our modern world.

Ultimately, Succession is not just a show; it’s a complex tapestry of lessons about business and family ties presented through an unforgettable narrative.

Succession offers an enriching experience beyond the screen for those willing to learn. If you have not seen it yet, it is a show that I highly recommend to everyone.
